How to find the right shoe size for your kid
Children’s feet grow rapidly - especially in the first few years of life. Between the ages of 1 and 6, children’s feet can gain up to 1.5 mm (around 0.06 in) per month. That's why they regularly need new shoes that offer enough room to grow. As children often don't notice when their shoes are getting too small, it is all the more important that you as a parent regularly check their shoe size and make sure there is enough room.
Tight shoes can affect your child’s foot health and lead to long-term problems. To avoid this, shoes should always be at least 10 mm (0.4 in) and a maximum of 17 mm (0.7 in) longer than your child’s feet. If you measure regularly and take this margin into account, you can ensure that the shoes fit perfectly and support the natural, healthy development of the feet.
Option 1: Measure your kid’s feet
You will need: A sheet of paper, a pencil and a ruler or measuring tape.
- Lay the sheet of paper flat on the floor so that it is flush against the wall. Your child should stand on the paper, heel directly against the wall. Whether the measurement is taken barefoot or in socks depends on how your child will wear the shoes later.
- Carefully mark your child’s longest toe on the paper and then measure the distance between the wall and the marked line. Repeat this step for the other foot as well, as they may be different sizes.
- Add enough clearance: Add about 10-17 mm (0.4-0.7 in) to the measured foot length to ensure that the feet have enough clearance and the shoes will fit for several months.
- Compare these values with the lengths in the size chart for the shoe model (see below) to find the right size. If your child is between two sizes, we recommend the larger size for closed shoes.
Option 2: Size guide PDF to print out
