Every online order that is subsequently shipped via parcel service releases greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide (CO2) into the atmosphere during transport from the online shop's warehouse to the customer's home.
At Feelgrounds, we care not only about our feet but also about the environment. As part of our ongoing efforts, we recently joined Shopify Planet, which allows us to ship all our orders carbon-neutrally.
What does CO2-neutral shipping mean?
Carbon-neutral shipping means that the CO2 emissions generated during package delivery are offset by measures that save or sequester the same amount of CO2. This can be achieved, for example, through investments in climate protection projects such as reforestation or innovative technologies for carbon capture and storage. In this way, the CO2 emissions from shipping are compensated and thus neutralized.
What is Shopify Planet?
Shopify Planet purchases carbon removal credits and redeems them on our behalf to ensure that the same amount of carbon dioxide generated by our deliveries is removed from the atmosphere. Emissions are calculated based on shipping distance, package weight, and mode of transport.
What are the advantages of carbon-neutral shipping with Shopify Planet?
Given the high CO2 levels in the atmosphere, a combination of several different solutions is probably the most promising approach. That's why the Shopify Sustainability Fund supports diverse approaches to help the best technical and nature-based solutions emerge.
Which solutions are funded by Shopify Planet?
Natural solutions for carbon removal include binding carbon in natural resources such as the soil or the oceans. Running Tide, for example, uses carbon buoys sown with algae that capture carbon through a natural process and sink it to the seabed.
Another solution proposed by DroneSeed involves using drones to accelerate the reforestation of regions affected by wildfires.
Technology- based solutions often employ machines to extract carbon from the atmosphere like a sponge. Carbon Engineering is currently building the world's largest direct air capture plant, capable of capturing up to one million tons of carbon dioxide per year. The pure CO2 in gaseous form can then be stored long-term, for example in deep rock formations, or used in other ways.
One such company that makes good use of captured carbon is Twelve. The company specializes in technological solutions for using captured CO2 instead of fossil fuels to manufacture products that are needed anyway, such as detergents, eyeglass lenses, car parts, or jet fuel.
