Every time you order something online and have it shipped, greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide (CO2) are released into the atmosphere during transport from the warehouse to your doorstep.
At Feelgrounds, we care about more than just your feet – we care about our planet too. As part of our ongoing efforts, we recently joined Shopify Planet, which allows us to ship all our orders carbon-neutral.
What does carbon-neutral shipping mean?
Carbon-neutral shipping means that the CO2 emissions generated during package delivery are offset by measures that save or capture an equivalent amount of CO2. This can include investments in climate protection projects like reforestation or innovative carbon capture and storage technologies. This way, the CO2 emissions from shipping are compensated and neutralized.
What is Shopify Planet?
Shopify Planet purchases carbon removal credits and redeems them on our behalf to ensure that the same amount of carbon dioxide caused by our deliveries is removed from the atmosphere. Emissions are calculated based on shipping distance, package weight, and transportation method.
What are the benefits of carbon-neutral shipping with Shopify Planet?
Given the high levels of CO2 in the atmosphere, a combination of multiple different solutions is probably the most promising approach. That's why the Shopify Sustainability Fund supports various methods, allowing the best technological and nature-based solutions to emerge.
What solutions are funded through Shopify Planet?
Nature-based solutions for carbon removal include storing carbon in natural resources like soil or oceans. Running Tide, for example, uses carbon buoys seeded with algae that capture carbon through a natural process and sink it to the ocean floor.
Another solution from DroneSeed uses drones to accelerate reforestation in regions affected by wildfires.
Technology-based solutions often use machines to pull carbon from the atmosphere like a sponge. Carbon Engineering is currently building the world's largest direct air capture facility, capable of capturing up to one million tons of carbon dioxide per year. The pure CO2 gas can then either be stored long-term in deep rock formations or repurposed for other uses.
One company putting captured carbon to good use is Twelve. They specialize in technology that uses captured CO2 instead of fossil fuels to manufacture everyday products like detergents, eyeglass lenses, car parts, or jet fuel.
