Knit vs. Mesh: What's the Difference?

We're delighted that our new models Original Knit and Droptop Knit are resonating so well with you. As our Feelgrounds product range expands, so does the difficulty in choosing. That's why we want to show you in this article what sets our "Knit" product line apart from our "Mesh" product line.

The different names of our "Mesh" and "Knit" product lines are based on the upper material of our sneakers. While our Mesh models are made of mesh, our Knit models are made of – yes, knit!

In the English-speaking world, "knit" is self-explanatory. "To knit" means to create fabric by interlocking loops of yarn with needles. Knit material is therefore descriptive of the fabric's manufacturing method. A "knit" fabric is not woven, but knitted.

Water-Repellent

The fabric of our Knit models has a water-repellent coating. Caution: water-repellent does not mean waterproof. The special PFC, PFOA and PFOS-free layer made of wax and silicone ensures that, for example, raindrops falling on the shoe are not immediately absorbed by the fabric, but instead bead up on the surface. Additionally, the sole and upper material are bonded together with a waterproof adhesive. Since the coating loses its effectiveness over time, we recommend regularly refreshing the protection with an waterproofing spray.

Mesh material offers no protection against rain due to its net-like, coarse-pored surface structure, but is even more breathable as a result.

Heat & Breathability

Both our Knit models and our Mesh models are breathable. However, Knit material has a much tighter weave compared to our coarse-pored mesh. Our particularly breathable Mesh models are therefore preferred on warmer, dry days, while our Knit models also offer more protection during transitional months in autumn and spring, for example against wind and moisture.

Stretch Capability & Durability

One characteristic of Knit material is that it is more elastic compared to woven fabrics. Since our knit is tightly woven and made from stronger yarn, it is robust enough to not snag during ordinary everyday use. Our Knit models therefore offer particularly good toe freedom and still look excellent after several months.

In comparison, our Mesh gives very little and holds its shape excellently over a long period of time. The material is perfectly suited for everyday use.

However, since neither material is abrasion-resistant, we recommend neither our Mesh nor our Knit models for sports.

Fit

Due to the elasticity of the Knit material, our Original Knit and Droptop Knit fit slightly looser compared to their Mesh counterparts. While the cutting pattern is absolutely identical, the Mesh models fit a bit snugger in particular around the heel and ankle due to the reduced flexibility of the material.

For wide feet, we therefore recommend our Knit models. Our Droptop model offers particularly good toe freedom, as it has no seams in the toe area. Our Highrise model also offers more space for wider feet, where the seam is positioned further toward the center of the foot, away from the widest part of the foot.

On our sizing page you can access fit recommendations for each model, detailed measurements, our printable sizing guide PDF, instructions for measuring your feet, and much more. If you need additional help finding the right size, please don't hesitate to contact us. Please send us your measurements and/or pictures of your feet according to our sizing guide PDF. We're happy to help!

Feelgrounds Logo on the Heel

Our Knit models come with a stylish, wide woven FEELGROUNDS lettering on the heel. Depending on the color variant, this stands out more or less.

Our Mesh models feature a transparent, rather subtle FEELGROUNDS print. If you prefer a more understated look, our Mesh variants are the perfect choice for you.

Machine Washable

Due to the elasticity of the material and the water-repellent coating, we do not recommend cleaning our Knit models in the washing machine. Instead, we recommend hand-washing with cleaning foam and a cloth or very soft brush that won't roughen up the fabric fibers. Here you can find suitable care products for your Feelgrounds.

Our Mesh models can be washed multiple times throughout their lifetime without any problems on a cold wash with a low spin cycle in the washing machine. We recommend using a mesh laundry bag for especially gentle washing. Afterwards, your Feelgrounds are sparkling clean again
