Knit vs. Mesh: What's the difference?

We're delighted that our new Original Knit and Droptop Knit models have been so well received. However, with the growing range of Feelgrounds models, choosing the right one can be a challenge. Therefore, in this article, we'd like to explain the differences between our "Knit" and "Mesh" product lines.

The different names of the product lines “Mesh” and “Knit” refer to the upper material of our sneakers. While our Mesh models are made of mesh, our Knit models are made of – yes, knit!

In German-speaking regions, the term "knit" isn't self-explanatory. However, "to knit" (pronounced "nitt") simply means "to knit" in English. Therefore, "knit material" describes the fabric's manufacturing process. A "knit" fabric is thus not woven, but knitted.

Water-repellent

The fabric of our Knit models has a water-repellent coating. Please note: Water-repellent does not mean waterproof. The special PFC, PFOA, and PFOS-free layer of wax and silicone ensures that, for example, raindrops falling on the shoe are not immediately absorbed by the fabric, but rather bead up and roll off the surface. Additionally, the sole and upper are bonded with a waterproof adhesive. However, since the coating loses its effectiveness over time, we recommend regularly refreshing the protection with a waterproofing spray.

Due to its net-like, coarse-pored surface structure, the mesh material offers no protection against rain, but is even more breathable.

Warmth & Breathability

Both our knit and mesh models are breathable. However, the knit material is significantly tighter than our open-weave mesh. Our particularly breathable mesh models are therefore ideal for warmer, dry days, while our knit models offer a bit more protection, for example against wind and rain, during the transitional months of autumn and spring.

Stretchability & Durability

One characteristic of knit fabric is its greater elasticity compared to woven fabrics. Because our knit is very tightly woven and made from a firmer yarn, it's robust enough to withstand everyday wear without any snagging. Our knit styles therefore offer exceptional toe room and still look great even after several months.

In contrast to knit fabric, our mesh hardly stretches and therefore retains its shape exceptionally well over a long period. The material is perfectly suited for everyday use.

Since neither material is abrasion-resistant, we do not recommend either our mesh or knit models for sports.

Fit

Due to the stretch of the knit material, our Original Knit and Droptop Knit shoes fit slightly looser compared to their mesh counterparts. While the cut is absolutely identical, the mesh models fit a bit more snugly, especially around the heel and ankle, due to the reduced elasticity of the material.

For wider feet, we therefore recommend our knit models. Our droptop model offers particularly ample toe room, as it has no seams in the toe area. Our high-rise model, where the seam is positioned further towards the center of the foot, away from the widest point, also provides more space for wider feet.

On our size guide page, you can find a fit recommendation, detailed measurements, our printable size guide PDF, instructions for measuring your feet, and much more for each model. If you need additional help finding the right size, please contact us. Please send us your measurements and/or photos of your feet to complete our size guide PDF. We're happy to help!

Feelgrounds logo on the heel

Our knit models feature a stylish, wide-woven FEELGROUNDS logo on the heel. Depending on the colorway, this logo stands out more or less.

Our mesh models feature a transparent, rather subtle FEELGROUNDS print. So, if you prefer something understated, our mesh versions are the perfect choice.

Washing machine safe

Due to the elasticity of the material and the water-repellent coating, we do not recommend washing our knit models in the washing machine. Instead, we recommend hand washing with cleaning foam and a cloth or a very soft brush that will not roughen the fibers of the material. Here you will find suitable care products for your Feelgrounds.

Our mesh models can easily be washed multiple times in the washing machine on a cold cycle and low spin speed throughout their lifespan. We recommend using a laundry bag for extra gentle washing. Afterwards, your Feelgrounds will be sparkling clean again.
